Information on artist and/or manufactory:
The Icarus Rhodes manufactory is one of the most important and famous Greek ceramic manufactories, mainly due to the fact that with the onset of the war, in the first decades of the 20th century, many Vietrese artists from the German period moved to Rhodes and made objects of the highest artistic level. With the end of the war, almost all of them returned to Italy, but the manufactory continued to produce artistic objects in the Iznik style with the quality and style of the Vietrese school that the workers had absorbed anyway, a style that made it famous all over the world. “Iznik” ceramics take their name from the city of their origins, Iznik (ancient Nicaea) of Bithynia in today’s northwestern Turkey, where they were produced from the 15th to the 17th century. The characteristics of these ceramics were their bright colors and their central motifs depicting birds, peacocks, and flowers. They were generally used for wall coverings, vases, tableware, and other objects of daily use, as well as Christian temple decoration. Iznik ceramics were prized by the Ottoman Imperial Court and wealthy families in Constantinople while, during the 19th century, they were sought after by foreign collectors and travelers.
